FilmTastic - Saving your eyes and pockets from horrid movies...

The Day the earth stood still

December 28th 2008 02:07
Don't you just hate it when Hollywood runs out of ideas and decides to remake an old classic, only to find, they have failed to make it better than the original. You'd think the film industry would improve over time, but they are still producing movies that disappoint.

The only thing commendable about this movie was the graphics. It was a great visual experience, I could have sat for hours watching things being destroyed by little bugs. However, the movie was let down by a weak storyline. The original movie was about the extermination of mankind if we didn't stop killing each other. The plot changed a bit in the remake, now focusing on the recent issue of global warming and our gradual destruction of earth. The basic message is, if we don't stop destroying the earth, we will be exterminated.

Then, surprise surprise, Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), the alien, meets a woman and her child and decides not to destroy earth anymore. I find this so ridiculous, there was no gradual build up of emotions or evidence that Klaatu was developing an understanding of humans. Throughout the whole movie, Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), just repeats the line "we will change, just give us a chance". Yeh, if i was an alien, i would decide to forget the thousands of years you have spent destroying earth, just because you now say you will change. Why would an alien decide to believe that we would change, just because one woman decides to speak for everyone and says that we will change?

One second he says "there's nothing i can do now, the process has started", next second he suddenly decides to go turn off the sphere.

The movie was boring until the destruction and chaos started, but this only lasted 10-15mins....the whole movie was spent talking and discovering what the alien was here for and hiding from the government. I had huge expectations for this movie, but once again found myself let down.

Only watch this if you really want to sit it out for the destruction scene. Maybe watch it at IMAX if you can be bothered. I expect this would be quite good at IMAX. There is an underlying message to this movie, "stop destroying earth". But, we don't need to watch this movie to know all about global warming and that we are gradually digging our own graves.

Overall raring: 2.5/5

Movie release on New Years day

December 26th 2008 03:33
It's Boxing day today, so i'll be heading off to the cinemas later to check out either "The day the earth stood still", "Benjamin Button" or "Bedtime Stories". I'm still quite indecisive at the moment. I will put a review up later.

For now, i will post up the releases for New Years Day.....YAY. Please note, these are the releases for Australian cinemas.

It's a good list of movies to start off the New Year:

Bolt

Starring: John Travolta, Susie Essman and Miley Cyrus.
I have always loved animations, so i am looking forward to this movie. Bolt is a super hero dog on tv, but he thinks his a super hero in real life. When one of the stars of another hit tv show are accidentally shipped off to New York, Bolt decides to embark on a journey across the country to save his friend.

Yes Man

Starring: Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is always hilarious so i am expecting the same for this. The trailer seems pretty funny, but i'm hoping they didn't show all the good parts in the trailer already.
Synopsis on Reading cinemas website:
A man signs up for a self-help program based on one simple principle: say yes to everything... and anything.

Marley and Me

Starring: Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston
A comedy/drama about a young couple that adopts a labrador, and from it learns the meaning of love and family. This movie is based on the bestselling book by Josh Grogan.

Boxing day at Australian cinemas.

December 19th 2008 02:56
Here is a list of movies coming out on Boxing Day in Australian cinemas. Watch out for them.

Boxing Day 2008:

I've Loved You So Long

French with English subtitles. Starring Kristin Scott Thomas.
This is a drama about two sisters that get reunited after 15 years. It was an enormous critical and box office success in France. Looks good for those wanting a bit of drama. Reviews have said that this movie is very intense and deeply moving.

Bedtime Stories

Starring Adam Sandler.
The trailer was so funny, i can't wait to watch the movie. Adam Sandler plays a hotel handyman who discovers that the bedtime stories he tells his nephew and niece begin to mysteriously come true. He tries to take advantage of it, but the unexpected twists the kids add in begin to turn his life upside down.

Frost/ Nixon

Starring Frank Langella and Michael Sheen.
Based on the interview between Nixon and Frost in 1977. The movie re-creates the on-air interview as well as the controversial weeks surrounding it.

Ghajini

Bollywood production. Hindi with subtitles. Starring Aamir Khan.
Some say this is based on Christopher Nolan's (The Dark Knight) movie "Memento", the director has refuted this but has admitted that it is a remake of the Tamil film "Ghajini". So, i assume, it must be pretty similar to memento for people to mistake it as a remake. The movie is about a man who suffers from short term memory loss after the death of his wife. He tries to seek vengeance, but struggles as his memory holds him back.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.
What a film to end the year...
This looks so good i don't want to spoil it with my own summary. This was found on the reading cinemas website:

"I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time.

We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Starring Keanu Reeves.
This is a remake of the 1951 classic.
As seen on the reading cinemas website:

Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission – and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth."

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Starring Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.
This is a Comedy/Drama about two American women who travel to Barcelona for a summer holiday. One is sensible and engaged to be married the other is emotionally and sexually adventurous. They find themselves romantically entangled with a charismatic painter who is still involved with his tempestuous ex-wife.

Twilight

December 16th 2008 02:12
I have yet to find a novel-based movie, that lives up to the standard of it's novel. After reading Twilight, I had visions of vampires, action, drama, romance. Expecting the movie to have potential, I anticipated this movie for a few months.

Saw V

December 13th 2008 03:28
No matter how many sequels they make for Saw, I know us Saw-maniacs out there will still go and watch it. Even if the last 100 sequels were ridiculous, we'd still have hope that the 101st one will blow us away, just like the first. This is what happens, when you take a simple idea, add a twisted ending and surprise the world.

Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa

December 11th 2008 01:22
If you enjoyed the first Madagascar, expect to be pleasantly surprised. Just as you thought it couldn't get better, it just did. Definitely worth watching. Madagascar 2 is a simple movie with a simple storyline and simple jokes that leave everyone of any age and gender holding their tummy in laughter. This is what i like about this movie, it doesn't get too confusing, gets straight to the point and has jokes that everyone can relate to and understand.

How to lose friends and alienate people

December 10th 2008 06:54
I feel like i have wasted 110mins of my life watching this. I found this movie so boring and pointless. There were a few random funny and awkward moments, but apart from that, the movie lacked interest. There were a few times in the movie where i found my mind just wondering off.

Starring Anna Faris from Scary Movie, this is a guaranteed tummy tickler. With her dopey look and ridiculous lines, this is one of the funniest movies this year.
