FilmTastic - Saving your eyes and pockets from horrid movies...

FilmTastic - January 2009

The new generation of movie heroes.

January 26th 2009 10:59
Seems that producers have run out of comics to base their movies on, and have now moved on to live-action movies based on Japanese anime and videogames. With the success of "Transformers", which was based on the popular japanese anime series in 2007, we are to expect a whole new generation of heroes to appear on our screens.

Hitting our screens first this year, will be "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li", starring Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li. I am quite skeptical of this movie, firstly, Kreuk reminds me NOTHING of Chun Li, she appears to me as mainly there for advertising and commercial purposes and secondly, why base such a good videogame on JUST Chun Li?. Being a girl growing up in a family of guys, as children, we obsessed over Street Fighter. I was always Chun Li, whether in the game or just running around roleplaying, however i always thought Ken and Ryu were really cool, but from the information i've gathered, they don't even appear in this movie. Maybe they are making space for a "Street Fighter: Legend of Ryu" and "Street Fighter: Legend of Ken"?. Street fighter is about martial arts and action, but i cannot imagine Kreuk throwing the crazy kicks that Chun Li does in the games. Also, without a good martial arts choreographer, which this film appears to not have, i don't expect much of this movie. With comics, it is always easy to just put on a mask and costume and immediately fit the role of the hero, but with live action anime or videogame-based movies, it is much harder to portray the characters, I am really wondering how Kristin Kreuk will do this. Will this be another disaster like the 1994 "Street Fighter" movie starring Jean Claude Van Damme?, we will just have to wait and see.

Due for release in late September, we have the long-awaited Dragonball Z Live-action movie, "Dragonball Evolution", starring Justin Chatwin as Goku. Again, like the legend of Chun Li, i am quite skeptical mainly because of the cast. It doesn't make sense to me that they would take a japanese character and portray him with an American. There is no racism intended, but you would find it weird too, if just say a chinese actor played Spiderman or Batman. I know technically, it is never stated that Goku is Japanese, but at least get a stronger looking person, who can pull the powerful moves that Goku does. We have all grown up with images of these heroes, and with the wrong cast, that can be all it takes to spoil a really good movie. When this film first went into production, it was rumoured that Stephen Chow, an extremely popular Hong Kong actor/director/producer, would be directing the film, however in the end, he decided on being just the producer as he enjoys working on films that are entirely his own original stories. He is the only hope i feel for this movie, as he is a comical genius who really knows how to surprise and entertain his audience, so i'm hoping, even though his not the director, his influence may make this movie a pleasant surprise.

A movie i am really excited about is "King of Fighters", which is currently in production and due for release some time in 2010. Directed by Gordon Chan, a renowned Hong Kong director, that has been involved in many famous movies including a few of Jet Li's movies, I am expecting well choreographed martial arts scenes from this. Starring Sean Faris as Kyo Kusanagi and Maggie Q as Mai Shiranui, I am really hoping they don't spoil this popular videogame/anime. Just like Street Fighter, i grew up with King Of Fighters, so it is almost like a dream come true to finally see these characters come to life. I have never heard of Sean Faris, so i don't know what to say of him, but kyo is such a cool character, that you can't imagine anyone good enough to play this role, I'm sure many fans will agree. I look forward to Maggie Q the most, as i have always enjoyed watching her, and she is well trained in martial arts, so i think she is well suited to a martial arts based film like this, PLUS, she is hot!!. Looking forward to 2010......already....

Underworld: Rise of the lycans

January 22nd 2009 14:26
It had all the elements to make a really good movie, including a good story, a good cast and good costumes and setting. But for some reason, it still felt like this third installation of the popular Underworld series was missing something.

Underworld: Rise of the lycans, is actually the prequel to the popular series, explaining Lucians role in the rise of the werewolves. It also explains the relationship between Lucian, Victor and his daughter, Sonja. If you haven't watched any of the first two movies, you will not know what i am going on about.

I think this movie worked really well as a prequel, as throughout the first and second Underworld movies, there were so many questions about the past that were left unanswered, and this one summed it up really well, explaining how everything started and why.

One flaw in the movie was dissapointingly, the graphics, which were not up to standard. It felt that they had been a bit lazy in adding more detail to the werewolves, maybe because the movie is so dark, they thought it didn't matter. However, it was something i noticed from the moment they appeared onscreen, and i was very dissapointed. They looked so computerized and fake, even the fur looked like plastic.

I did however like the costumes, and the setting. They fit really well into the movie and added to the whole medieval, fantasy-like appearance of the movie.

I really liked the love story that was being told in this prequel, it was very romantic and the chemistry was definitely there. I don't want to spoil too much, but just think of it as a medieval "Romeo and Juliet"- type story. Very touching.

The romance is great for the chicks, for the guys however, there could have been a little bit more action. The vampires seemed so weak in this movie, don't think there were any really good action scenes from them, apart from shooting arrows at the lycans, which seemed to be the only thing they ever do, what happened to their immortal power?. As it is titled "rise of the lycans", it would be fair not to expect much from the lycans, but if you like blood and gore, you will be delighted by a few scenes.

All in all, there was so much i liked about this movie, but for some reason i didn't feel satisfied. Maybe there were too many long gaps between action scenes, or maybe just alot of unneccesary scenes, i'm not sure. The movie bored me at some parts, yet i enjoyed the love story being told. I have always enjoyed fantasy movies like this, even though it could have been better, i still enjoyed it.

Overall rating: 4/5

Movie releases 15th January

January 7th 2009 08:21
It's that time of the week again....time to introduce you to the movie's coming to Australian cinemas next week.

Bride Wars

Starring: Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway.
I am looking forward to this comedy because it stars two of my favourite actresses.
The movie is basically about two best friends that end up fighting over the same wedding venue due to a clerical error and clash of wedding date.
Who will win their dream venue in the end?

Hotel For Dogs

Starring: Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Kyla Pratt and Lisa Kudrow.
This family film is based on the novel by Lois Duncan. It is about two orphaned siblings who are forced to give up their beloved dog after moving into a foster home. Unable to abandon their dog, they turn a closed hotel into a home for their dog, and later, other strays they find.

The Wrestler

Starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei.
I don't know about this Drama.
As seen on the reading cinemas website:

Back in the late 1980s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a champion professional wrestler. Now, 20 years later, he ekes out a living stacking shelves in a supermarket and performing fights for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms around New Jersey.

It soon becomes clear though, that amateur wrestling is not just a money-making arrangement for the physically shattered ex-champ - the ring is the only place of comfort to him in a world he finds bewildering. Estranged from his teenage daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and essentially alone in the world, Randy is a battered dreamer who lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans.

However a heart attack forces Randy to evaluate the state of his life - trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei). Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy "The Ram" back into his world of wrestling.

A Rocky-style drama, "The Wrestler" delivers just the right amount of raw action and grit balanced with a finely-detailed and affecting story which will stun audiences. Rourke creates a galvanizing, humorous, deeply moving portrait that instantly takes its place among the great, iconic screen performances.

As it is being compared to "Rocky", I am thinking of giving this movie a go when it comes out on video. May be a waste of time for watching at the cinemas.

Chandni Chowk To China

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, Chia Hui Liu.
Only showing at Reading Cinemas. This Bollywood comedy looks quite funny.

Doubt

Starring: Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
With such a famous cast, it's surprising that this is the first time I've heard of this movie.
Here's a synopsis from the reading cinemas website:

It's1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline.

The winds of political change are sweeping through the country, and, indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James, a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius is galvanized to begin a crusade to both unearth the truth and expunge Flynn from the school.

Now, without a shred of proof or evidence except her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn, a battle that threatens to tear apart the Church and school with devastating consequences.

Sounds like a very unique drama about religion, morality and values of the 1960's.

Role Models

Starring: Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott.
Two men are forced to be mentors as a part of their community service. The trailer looks so funny. This movie also co-stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse who played McLovin in Superbad.

I don't think i need to say much for you to already know that this is a good movie. Even watching the trailer gives you a tingle down the spine. No wonder this has been nominated for so many awards
