Australia

Many have heard of us, have wondered about us, have claimed to know about us, but do they really know us....
A country so isolated from the rest of the world, that it makes up almost a whole continent, so vast, that it's beauty is waiting to be discovered, so mysterious, that it's stories astound you leading you into a world you never thought existed....a country called "Australia".
Now, I could write a whole blog about this fine country which i call home, but why waste my time, when Mr Luhrmann here, claims to have made a movie which will show the world all about us. Our history, our culture, our land and our people showcased over a 2hr 45min movie, sounds to me like an awfully long........advertising campaign. An advertising campaign sums up the impression which i got from watching this movie, with its constant panning of the Australian landscape and it's AMAZINGLY blue ocean. I was left thinking "wow, i'd like to go there someday", then i realised, I ALREADY AM HERE......
Thumbs up though to Baz Luhrmann for filming this country in such a beautiful way, but in terms of entertainment, this romantic epic wasn't that romantic nor epic. The movie started off quite good, but half way through i couldn't help thinking "when is the war scene coming, because this is getting really boring" and when it finally came "please let it end" i thought, because the war scene was just so dissapointing. This movie was way too long and draggy, yet the relationship between Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman's characters seemed to develop too quickly. One second they hated eachother, the next they were deeply in love....and worst of all, her husband only just died.....
Praise goes to Brandon Walters who i fell in love with. His acting amazed me and i enjoyed every scene he was in. To me, he was the star of the movie. For those who don't know, he plays a little indigenous child named Nullah, who represents the stolen generation. His innocence and bravery touched my heart.
Overall, "Australia" wasn't a bad movie, but it surely was a dissapointment. With all the hype and money that was put into it, I was expecting a breakthrough, I thought that Australia would finally be properly introduced to the world, i was expecting a movie that would become a classic, but unfortunately, it's nothing special. This is a movie better to be left for when it comes out on DVD unless you really want to watch the Australian landscape on the big screen. One last point, this movie says "crikey" more than i have ever said in my life......
So, if you can put up with that, go watch "Australia" and "Let's go walkabout".
Overall rating: 3/5
