FilmTastic - Saving your eyes and pockets from horrid movies...

The Day the earth stood still

December 28th 2008 02:07
Don't you just hate it when Hollywood runs out of ideas and decides to remake an old classic, only to find, they have failed to make it better than the original. You'd think the film industry would improve over time, but they are still producing movies that disappoint.

The only thing commendable about this movie was the graphics. It was a great visual experience, I could have sat for hours watching things being destroyed by little bugs. However, the movie was let down by a weak storyline. The original movie was about the extermination of mankind if we didn't stop killing each other. The plot changed a bit in the remake, now focusing on the recent issue of global warming and our gradual destruction of earth. The basic message is, if we don't stop destroying the earth, we will be exterminated.

Then, surprise surprise, Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), the alien, meets a woman and her child and decides not to destroy earth anymore. I find this so ridiculous, there was no gradual build up of emotions or evidence that Klaatu was developing an understanding of humans. Throughout the whole movie, Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), just repeats the line "we will change, just give us a chance". Yeh, if i was an alien, i would decide to forget the thousands of years you have spent destroying earth, just because you now say you will change. Why would an alien decide to believe that we would change, just because one woman decides to speak for everyone and says that we will change?

One second he says "there's nothing i can do now, the process has started", next second he suddenly decides to go turn off the sphere.

The movie was boring until the destruction and chaos started, but this only lasted 10-15mins....the whole movie was spent talking and discovering what the alien was here for and hiding from the government. I had huge expectations for this movie, but once again found myself let down.

Only watch this if you really want to sit it out for the destruction scene. Maybe watch it at IMAX if you can be bothered. I expect this would be quite good at IMAX. There is an underlying message to this movie, "stop destroying earth". But, we don't need to watch this movie to know all about global warming and that we are gradually digging our own graves.

Overall raring: 2.5/5
