Underworld: Rise of the lycans

It had all the elements to make a really good movie, including a good story, a good cast and good costumes and setting. But for some reason, it still felt like this third installation of the popular Underworld series was missing something.
Underworld: Rise of the lycans, is actually the prequel to the popular series, explaining Lucians role in the rise of the werewolves. It also explains the relationship between Lucian, Victor and his daughter, Sonja. If you haven't watched any of the first two movies, you will not know what i am going on about.
I think this movie worked really well as a prequel, as throughout the first and second Underworld movies, there were so many questions about the past that were left unanswered, and this one summed it up really well, explaining how everything started and why.
One flaw in the movie was dissapointingly, the graphics, which were not up to standard. It felt that they had been a bit lazy in adding more detail to the werewolves, maybe because the movie is so dark, they thought it didn't matter. However, it was something i noticed from the moment they appeared onscreen, and i was very dissapointed. They looked so computerized and fake, even the fur looked like plastic.
I did however like the costumes, and the setting. They fit really well into the movie and added to the whole medieval, fantasy-like appearance of the movie.
I really liked the love story that was being told in this prequel, it was very romantic and the chemistry was definitely there. I don't want to spoil too much, but just think of it as a medieval "Romeo and Juliet"- type story. Very touching.
The romance is great for the chicks, for the guys however, there could have been a little bit more action. The vampires seemed so weak in this movie, don't think there were any really good action scenes from them, apart from shooting arrows at the lycans, which seemed to be the only thing they ever do, what happened to their immortal power?. As it is titled "rise of the lycans", it would be fair not to expect much from the lycans, but if you like blood and gore, you will be delighted by a few scenes.
All in all, there was so much i liked about this movie, but for some reason i didn't feel satisfied. Maybe there were too many long gaps between action scenes, or maybe just alot of unneccesary scenes, i'm not sure. The movie bored me at some parts, yet i enjoyed the love story being told. I have always enjoyed fantasy movies like this, even though it could have been better, i still enjoyed it.
Overall rating: 4/5
